In the Middle Ages, the pilgrimage of Santiago de Compostela was one of the three most important pilgrimages that all good Christians had to go on.

There was Rome to meditate on St Peter's and St Paul's tombs; there was Jerusalem and the St Sepulchre and at the western end of Europe appeared Santiago de Compostela.

Since then millions of pilgrims from all over the Occident have converged there and made it a mythical site. The paths are varied. Two of them cross the Loire Forez territory: one from Lyon to the East and one from Cluny to the North, both meeting not far from the village of St Georges-Hauteville. Welcoming pilgrims is a real tradition in the Forez!
